The real power of leadership isn’t in doing more; it’s in being more.

The most dangerous words in leadership aren’t “I can’t do it.” They’re “I’LL DO IT MYSELF.”

Here’s why:

When you’ve mastered workplace fluency, you naturally become the go-to problem solver. Your expertise is unquestioned, and your execution is flawless. It’s a powerful place to be, but it can also be a trap.

The very things that make you exceptional can hold you back from the next stage of leadership. The journey from technical excellence to executive influence requires intentional shifts.

First, move from “Let me fix that” to “Let’s explore solutions together.”
Leadership isn’t about doing it all; it’s about empowering others to rise to the occasion. Instead of handling everything yourself, invite collaboration.

Second, shift from sharing updates to shaping insights.
For example, instead of saying, “Here’s the project status,” say, “Here’s what this means for our strategy.” Influence is built by providing clarity and connecting the dots between actions and goals.

Third, transform from problem-solver to perspective-giver.
Resist the urge to jump in with answers. Instead, lead with thoughtful questions like, “What possibilities haven’t we considered?” This sparks ownership and creative thinking in others.

The shift from “I’ll do it” to “I’ll be it” starts with small but impactful changes:
• WORDS: Stop saying, “I’ll handle that report.” Start asking, “Who could grow from leading this?”
• THOUGHTS: Stop thinking, “It’s faster if I do it myself.” Start thinking, “How can I multiply my impact?”
• PRESENCE: Stop being everywhere doing everything. Start being intentional about where you show up and how you contribute.

The real power of leadership isn’t in doing more; it’s in being more.

Your words shape outcomes.
Your thoughts drive decisions.
Your presence creates possibilities.

Next time you’re tempted to dive in and handle something yourself, pause. Ask yourself:
• “How can I turn this into an opportunity for influence?”
• “How can I shift the conversation toward strategy?”
• “What thoughtful question can I ask to spark new ideas?”

Remember, technical excellence got you here. Influence will take you to the next level. The leaders who stand out are the ones who know when to let go, guide others, and create space for growth. That’s where real leadership begins.
